Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an overwhelming collection of betting choices and because you have many players battling for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
