Stu Ungar is thought to be by many to the very best NL Texas hold em Poker player ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in 1953 and started playing poker prior to reaching his teens.
The young bettor began wagering gin and at the age of ten had won his 1st gin rummy tournament, while on vacation with his mother and father. By the time he turned 14 the little poker maestro had become a pro and stopped going to school.
In 1954 Stu entered the record books by winning $10,000 in a gin rummy tournament without dropping a single hand, a record which still stands in New York today.
The quick talking superstar has been compared, in poker terms, to sporting superstars like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. Stu Ungar had a genuine ability for playing poker except regardless of his achievements in Hold em poker, he preferred playing gin.
Stu once said that there might a few day be a much better No Limit Hold em player than him but he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a much better gin gambler.
In 1980 Stu was put on the world map as one of the best Texas holdem Poker gamblers in the earth when he was crowned World Poker Champion for the very first time. Amazingly it was the first time he had entered the tournament.
The following year he put aside any suggestions that it had been luck, by successfully defending his title. And in 1997 Stu set the record by succeeding his 3rd World poker championship.
Except this poker master also fought with drug abuse and a year following winning his 3rd title Stu died in his hotel room. According to medical doctors, he had passed away from cardiac arrest which was caused by his lifestyle.
Stu had started out with nothing but his ability and natural talent for the game which made this poker wonderful a millionaire quite a few times over.
