Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little bit and moved to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play many hours and do not win a majority of the time. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The actual advancement in his abilities began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard was able to access some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the greatest women players the poker world ever. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
