Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to one cent-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he possibly could about the game. Phil routinely would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the detrimental feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
Phil began playing seriously after getting a false ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning period and coming away with a win was not a normal outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made two final tables and won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed many of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Las Vegas. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his success to discipline and an undying passion for the game of poker. He says that he is learning every single day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes errors in each game of poker and constantly strives to improve.
Even though Phil has won some big tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a regular basis.
