Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved betting on numerous card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in these card games as he was competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention even more on poker.
The real advancement in his skills began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable players would regularly compete against one another. Howard was able to access several of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker arena ever. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
