Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming array of betting options and because you have many individuals trying for the high, along with a few trying for the low hand.
