Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked betting on numerous card games when he was young. He found himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved away to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he would play many hours and don’t win most times. He earned some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best minds in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was an excellent student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the strongest women players the poker arena today. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
